Hanson is an interdisciplinary artist from Markham, Ontario who creates work that explores notions of womanhood, ritual, tradition and conformity. she seeks to explore the inherited systems of power that have shaped the lives, identities and behaviours of women across generations. She is a graduate from Queen’s University where she earned her BFAH. Here she was the recipient of the Margaret Craig Scholarship, the Andre Bieler Prize and the Medal in Visual Arts upon graduating.
Hanson’s recent work utilizes lace and found textiles as a surface for her paintings, prints and mixed media works. She is drawn to materials and imagery that have been coded as feminine in our western society and are often associated with delicacy, purity and domesticity. Hanson seeks to disrupt the connotations of these materials within her work, aiming to reclaim their meaning as a site of resilience and remembrance for her female subjects.
